600 Million people

in sub-Saharan Africa live without access to electricity.

The majority of these families use polluting fossil-fuel-based kerosene lamps and candles for their basic lighting needs, which may cost them up to 30% of their disposable income in fuel costs and have adverse economic and health consequences.

A Really Simple Solution

The CAN-LIGHT is a simple lighting device that makes use of recycled and upcycled Aluminum beverage cans, Aluminum food packaging or Aluminum foil to power L.E.D lights.

The Aluminum fuel component can be replaced manually and the Light will continue operating after each replacement.

No batteries required, no solar panel required, no recharge required.

Help us change 30 Million Lives

Help us change 30 Million lives by getting involved. We actively engage companies, organizations and governments that have real social impact goals and that want to make a difference in the world we live in.

Our sponsorship program delivers on several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

180 Billion cans used globally

  • Very little recycling infrastructure in Africa leads to landfill.
  • African households spend more than $17Bn on lighting, a large portion of that on kerosene and other fuel.
  • Fuel cost for lighting represents up to 30% of disposable income in millions of these households.
  • Billions of USD is spent annually by companies and organizations to deliver solutions to address access to electricity and lighting
  • There exists a multi-billion USD opportunity to associate brands with the solution to this problem through customer acquisition and brand awareness.

Our Motto

Recycle

Waste not want not. We believe that it is our responsibility to recover waste and protect our resources for future generations. This requires an active recovery of materials that would appear to have no value, although there is value in the recovery itself.

Upcycle

The reincorporation of waste materials to generate functional value is one of the cornerstones of our business, where we believe that a use for waste incetivizes the recovery and recycling of such waste to create a truly circular economy.

Replace

Replacing processes and traditional fuels that are not sustainable creates a foundation for future technologies to accelerate a transition to sustainable resources and helps to conserve the resources that are not sustainable for specific uses that may require it.

Empower

People, People, People. Our world and those that inhabit it face some serious challenges in the near future. In order for us to solve these challenges, we need to enable people, we need to empower people, we need to share our tools to allow people to impact their own lives and change their own futures.

FAQ

The CAN-LIGHT works on the metal-air fuel-cell principle, where it uses oxygen from ambient air and a diluted salt water or potassium hydroxide electrolyte with a very unique carbon based diffusion electrode in combination with Aluminum to generate electrical current and voltage.

The Aluminum component is the active fuel and with a simple replacement of the Aluminum component in the presence of electrolyte, the unit is effectively recharged.

It is the World’s fastest charging power source, by manual recharge and replacement.

The Aluminum is reduced to harmless Aluminum Hydroxide or AlOH, which is typically used as an anti-acid in medical use, PH neutralizer in agriculture or coagulant in water treatment.

AlOH is one of the base inputs in the production of Aluminum, so instead of melting Aluminum, we are actually breaking it down into one of its building blocks.

The light can typically run for up to 16-hours on a single set of cans/Aluminum foil and will continue running once the set of cans/foils are replaced. It will basically run as long as you have aluminum cans, foil or suitable packaging.
